It doesn’t matter which part of the world you are in, I’m sure all of you would have heard of Prada – a famous Italian leather brand that started off in Milan in year 1913. Prada is well known for their leather goods and fashion accessories, but did you know that the brand also operates in the Cafe business in Milan?

Pasticceria Marchesi – one of the most iconic cafe in the Milan. Founded in 1824, the brand is famous for its time-honred traditions and hand-made production, aiming to deliver the freshest and best pastries, sweets and coffees to their supporters.

In March 2014, Prada acquired 80% of Marchesi. As two brands that are deeply Milanese in heart, Prada and Marchesi aim to preserve the pastry shop’s historic mores while expanding its celebrated imprint. In September 2016, the third Marchesi shop opened inside Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II arcade, which is right next to the famous Milan Cathedral. The new venue is located on the mezzanine floor above the oldest Prada boutique in the world.

Ham, Ham, and More Ham – eat like a local in Milan

Travel Italy Milan Milano Must Eat Prosciutto La Prociutteria 28

You can’t say you have been to Italy without tasting some Prosicutto!

Continuing from my last blog post about the aperitivo in the absolutely stunning Palazzo di Paragi, my friend and I were still quite hungry afterwards, as the portion of the snacks were quite small, so we have decided to go and find somewhere for a late dinner. It is actually quite difficult to find restaurants that are still open at 10pm, but we managed to find this gem – “La Prosciutteria”! The name probably suggested a lot of what this restaurant is about, yes, you are correct, it’s a place that serves the famous Italian ham “Prosciutto”.

La Prosciutteria is about a 10 minutes walk from Palazzo di Paragi, and is situated on this street full of restaurants and little boutiques. By the time we got there was already 10:30pm, and the place is still full! We waited for about 15 minutes before we were seated in this cutely decorated homey restaurant. According to my friend who lives in Milan, this place is always full all day round! There must be something very good about this place, it’s time for me to check it out!

Before I talk about this restaurant, let me just give you some fun facts about Prosciutto – “Prosciutto, which translates to ham in Italian, is made only from the hind legs of pigs and is aged during a dry-curing process. There are typically two types of prosciutto: prosciutto cotto, which is cooked, and prosciutto crudo, which is uncooked and is most popular to enjoy on its own, wrapped around fruit, or used on charcuterie boards.” (What is Prosciutto?)

Now, back to the restaurant, I must say I love the decoration of this place! It is so unique and warm, makes you feel like you are having a meal at a friend’s place! The staffs were super friendly as well, which makes the place even warmer!

I especially like the arch shaped hallway here, separating the front of the restaurant – which consist of normal table seating, cash counter & the meat cabinet, and the back of the restaurant – which are tables with low seats & the bar seating area.

Affordable Drinks at a Luxury Hotel in Milan – Palazzo Parigi

pinterest_blog-index-page_v5-04

When I was in Italy, I’ve picked up this new habit – Italian Aperitivo!

As talked about in my last posts, the concept of the Italian Aperitivo is one where you meet up with your friends and social over a glass of drinks and some snacks. It is a simple idea, yet a great way to relax and to meet people. It is very similar to Happy Hour I’d say, just more elegant.

Talking about elegant, how can we miss the famous Palazzo Parigi Hotel and Spa in Milan? According to the hotel’s website, it is “re-constructed on the former site of the historical Palazzo Cramer from the 1600, the Palazzo Parigi Hotel & Grand Spa is set in the heart of Milan, in the fashionable Brera District. Facing a private park and surrounded by residences, banks and offices, it is close to the glittering shopping district Via della Spiga, art galleries, bars and night spots. Designed by Pierre Yves Rochon, featuring a classic style of the ’30 with a private garden and fountain, the new palace hotel embodies the very best of Milanese style with subtle French influences.”

View of Basilica di San Pietro from Another Angle Over a Glass of Wine

pinterest_blog-index-page_v5_artboard-2

For those who have been to the Vatican City, you would know that this place is usually crowded the whole year round… To take a good picture, you usually have to wait and wait and wait, or keep changing angles to find a less crowded spot, or, just be be super lucky…

This is the “less” crowded season already…

But, if you a person like me who doesn’t really like to fight the crowd, then this place I’m going to tell you about may just be the perfect spot for you!

Before I talk about this place, I just want to show you a few snap shot at Piazza di San Pietro (St. Peter’s Square!)

Ok, now, this place I want to tell you about is a best kept secret, and not many people know about it, so I would highly recommend you to go before this place is flooded by people. This roof top bar is hidden in a small hotel called the “Residenza Paola VI”, and it is basically right next to the Piazza. It overlooks the St. Peter’s Church in Vatican city, and is the perfect place for you to visit after a long day of sight seeing in the Vatican. The bar is furnished in classic old Italian style, and the staffs there are very nice and helpful, which makes this bar a very cozy place.

Fancy Festive Afternoon Tea in The Lanesborough London

A cup of tea is an excuse to share great thoughts with great minds!

Whether it’s for a special celebration, or just a treat after all your shopping, or you just simply want to indulge in the English ritual, an afternoon tea is an activity not to be missed in London.

During my winter trip to London last year, our company offered us a lovely afternoon treat at the famous Ritz Hotel. This year, to bring in the festiveness, they have organized a special Festive Afternoon Tea session at The Lanesborough London! Not only do you get the traditional tea and scones, you also get to enjoy the super delicious sweets and pastries that looks like art pieces! Let’s not forget to mention, The Landsborough London’s afternoon tea has won multiple awards from UK Tea Council’s Award of Excellence.

As our booking were a group booking, instead of dinning in the majestic, naturally-lit surroundings of Céleste or the elegantly refined Withdrawing Room, we had our own function room, which is still very nicely decorated.

There are 3 types of Afternoon Tea Sets offered here, the Traditional Afternoon Tea, the Prestige Afternoon Tea, and The Festive Afternoon Tea which runs from the 25th November till the 1st January. During the months of November and December, the hotel is decorated with lovely Christmas decorations, which blends in very well with the design of the hotel. What’s better than festive food paired with festive vibes right?

Mouth watering seafood rice bowl in Tsukiji Market Tokyo

Japan Tokyo Tsukiji Sushikuni Uni Sea Urchin Cover

“A seafood diet is the best diet ever – whenever you see food, eat it!”

For many of the visitors going to Japan, one of the “must do” would be to visit the Tsukiji fish market, and to see the biggest tuna auction in the world! In order to do that, you will need to get up super early to line up for one of the 120 spots available each day. I’ve tried once arriving there at 5:00am, only to realized all the spots were already taken. (It starts at 6:00am, and I guess I was too naive to think that 5:00am would guarantee myself a spot)

Without the Tuna Auction, Tsukiji market is still a great place to experience the local Japanese market, and most importantly, to taste the freshest seafood in Tokyo!

Japan Tokyo Tsukiji Tuna 01
Some restuarants will have live tuna cutting show at the front of their entrance – this usually happens during morning time

One of my all time favourite is this family run restaurant called the “Sushikuni (鮨国)”! It is a small restaurant with simple decoration, nothing fancy, and it’s only got 4 tables plus a few counter seats in front of the sushi bar. But don’t let the simplicity fool you! This little restaurant is one of the most popular restaurant in the whole of Tsukiji, and you are expecting to line up for hours if you come here at lunch time!

Remember this green signage so you won’t miss the entrance

Sushikuni is famous for their “over flowing sea urchin rice bowl” – the sea urchin is literally over flowing from the bowl! What makes this rice bowl so special is, not only the sea urchin is super fresh, the bowl actually contains two types of sea urchin, so you can double your sanctification! Other than the sea urchin rice bowl, they also have many different style of fresh seafood rice bowls, and a-la-carte available.

Okay, back to the main topic – “Over flowing sea urchin rice bowl” – The last time I went there, the sea urchins were both from Hokkaido, one wast the “Bafun uni”, and the other one was the “murasaki uni (purple sea urchin)”. I personally like the “murasaki uni” better as it tastes sweeter, but overall, they were both heavenly delicious!

Hand made udon covered in snow? Yummy curry soup udon!

must-go-in-tokyo-japan-shodai-udon-12-02

“Udon know how much you mean to me”

Udon, a long loved traditional dish of the Japanese culture. For those who don’t know what is udon, it is thick noodle made out of wheat flour, and could be eaten hot or cold, dried or with soup. The udon itself doesn’t really have much flavour, it often depends on the condiments and/or soup it is served with.

Just like spaghetti, fresh udon tastes so much better than those readily made one. The texture of the fresh udon are much more chewy, and doesn’t become soggy even after soaked in the soup for a long time.

There are quite a lot of restaurants that serve freshly made udon in Tokyo, but at Shodai (初代), it’s the soup that makes it so special! They are most famous for their “white creamy mashed potato curry soup udon”. Yes, Japanse drinks curry soup!! Curry soup is a more watery version of our conventional curry, and usually it is less salty.

img_3657-copyAlthough there’s no chunk of meat in the udon, but because the curry is cooked with vegetables and meat, the flavour is very rich. Together with the extremely creamy mashed potato foam on the top, this bowl makes it to one of the must try in Tokyo!

Meat Meat and More Meat

Travel Japan Tokyo Shinjuku Kaukicho Dondon Yakiniku 日本新宿歌舞伎町どんどん焼肉

“Hi all, nice MEATING you here”

One of my absolute must do thing when I visit a country/city is to taste the local delicacy of that place. I believe the joy of food brings people closer to each other, and it lets you bond with the locals, to learn and submerge in their lifestyle and culture.

“Food is more than survival!”

Due to my job nature, I have been going to Japan on a monthly basis, and most of the time, you travel alone during a business trip, which sometimes makes it hard to eat different type of food. I find myself ended up eating sushi, ramen or ended up in cafes most of the time when I’m in Japan. Last month when I was in Tokyo, I was lucky that an old friend of mine were also in the city at that time, so we’ve decided we are going to pig it out!

Getting close with the locals

Yakiniku – literally means grilled meat in Japanese, is a very popular food choice for Japanese people. It is not an “everyday” type of meal, but usually when you have some sort of celebration, or when you want to have a relaxed time with friends over a meal with a beer, then Yakiniku would be the pick.
